When it comes to cyberbullying, the UAE governing bodies and law enforcement takes up any form of insults to the utmost severity that’s punishable by law, which is what happened to a GCC Resident when he decided to accuse a social media influencer of “stealing his money”.
A GCC National was fined AED 1000 to pay a fine for sending an “abusive” message to a social media influencer over Whatsapp. Both the names of the individuals are unknown and undisclosed to protect their privacy.
This a cautious warning for individuals to be aware of the major repercussions in the UAE regarding cyber insulting
The news of the incident caught wind when it was initially reported by the influencer to the police. The influencer stated that she runs her Instagram account through paid promotions charged at a rate of AED10 per advertisement post to clients, which is paid as a balance on her phone.
The influencer mentioned that the process begins once the payment has been transferred and is available in her account. Afterward, she contacts the owner of the advertisement regarding any finer details that need to be mentioned in the post.
The build-up towards the insulting outburst was due to the defendant having transferred the credit amount the influencer requested to advertise a car he was selling which he did but she was unable to deliver the advertisement as promised. The influencer states that due to a busy schedule she postponed the ad. Which led the defendant to react by sending her insulting messages on Whatsapp.
The defendant was upset as is his right to be, since the influencer did not deliver the paid job as agreed, but took his language and insults too far when accusing her of stealing his money. Verbally hurt, the influencer returned the money and then went ahead to file a report with the police, in which the criminal court ordered the man to pay a fine of AED 1000.
