Yesterday at 7.50 am (9.35 am Nepal local time), Naila Kiani, a leading high-altitude mountaineer from Dubai, marked another historic achievement by conquering Makalu, the 5th highest peak in the world. This victory, her 11th 8,000-meter mountain, showcases her exceptional skill and resilience and cements her status as one of the world’s premier mountaineers.

Naila’s Story

During her 9-year stint in Dubai, Kiani has spent the last 3 years pursuing her passion for mountaineering. Her ascent of 11 of the world’s 14 highest peaks above 8,000 meters makes her the first Pakistani woman to accomplish this feat. Dubai, known as the “Land of Opportunities,” has provided Kiani with the ideal environment to pursue her dreams, offering the resources and support necessary for her journey.


The Descent: Challenges and Victories

After summiting Makalu, Kiani and her team faced the treacherous descent amid a snowstorm. Despite losing track of their route due to adverse weather conditions, they eventually found refuge at Camp 3, around 7,500 meters above sea level. This test underscores Kiani’s endurance and determination in the face of adversity.

Kiani’s accomplishments extend beyond mountaineering. In under 3 years, she has become the fastest Pakistani, male or female, to scale 11 of the 14 highest 8,000-meter peaks. Her achievements have earned her the prestigious Sitara-i-Imtiaz, highlighting her exceptional contributions to sports.
