Climate change on Pinterest: here’s how the platform is battling false information

If you see anything related to climate change on Pinterest, you can rest assured that it’s true.

The image sharing platform has introduced a brand new content policy aimed at banning false information related to climate change, becoming the first digital platform to adopt such clear-cut guidelines for both ads and organic content.

The new policy was introduced on the platform’s official website, where the team announced that content about climate change on Pinterest will be monitored on the app, and could possibly face consequences if it happens to harm the public’s safety, trust, or well-being. In addition, Pinterest’s team gave a detailed account of the types of content that will be removed if goes against the platform’s values; these types include:

Content that denies the existence or impacts of climate change, the human influence on climate change, or that climate change is backed by scientific consensus. 

False or misleading content about climate change solutions that contradict well-established scientific consensus.

Content that misrepresents scientific data, including by omission or cherry-picking, in order to erode trust in climate science and experts.

Harmful false or misleading content about public safety emergencies including natural disasters and extreme weather events.

Green life, sustainability and climate change on Pinterest are gaining popularity, with users looking for products to add in their household or even tips to reduce waste, which is why Pinterest is going the extra mile to protect its users from misleading information that could potentially harm the environment instead of helping.

To add to that, ads that contain deceptive information related to climate change on Pinterest such as conspiracy theories will surely be prohibited.

Finally, the Pinterest team is also working on inspiring a better future by strengthening a proper discourse when it comes to climate change on Pinterest. In order to reach that goal, the social site has collaborated with Pinterest Creators from the US, UK, Australia, Germany, France, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Indonesia and India to introduce a Creator Originals content series that will focus on thrifting hacks, upcycling different materials, reducing food waste, etc.
