Instagram announces ‘close friends’ for feed posts

Since Instagram‘s addition of the Close Friends option for Stories in 2018, Instagram has started to roll out a new option to share feed posts with Close Friends only, providing another way to facilitate more enclosed group engagement.

In that time, the application has since added a Close Friends feature for Notes and Reels but was yet to do so for feed posts, which previously could only be posted publically.

Several users in the UK have started to notice an ‘Audience’ selector option within the post composer flow, which enables them to share their feed post with ‘Close Friends’ only, as opposed to posting to their profile as normal.

Users on X have taken to the social media platform to further launch the news onto everyone’s orbits, such as Lia Haberman and Soha.

This new option would make it easier to limit who can see your posts, with a direct prompt within the creation flow that enables you to activate this setting on a post-by-post basis. It’s an update that several users have been urging Instagram for since the introduction of ‘Close Friends’.

This is in part of Instagram chief Adam Mosseri’s attempts to get users to post more on feed. He has repeatedly said that users on the social media platform prefer to share content with friends on stories or via DMs.

Past updates such as collaborative posts, post collections in chats, Notes, and more, have all been in an attempt to have users communicate more publicly.
