Ready, set, scroll: TikTok’s New ‘Clear Mode’ improving the user experience

Is the new clear mode a positive change?

Low and behold, TikTok’s new clear mode feature is currently being tested with a small group of users.

Created to make our scrolling-sessions even more enjoyable, when viewing content on the app, clear mode removes all on-screen text including captions and follow/share buttons for example.

A lot of the times, description and caption content can be misplaced and overshadow what is actually being shown in the videos themselves on the app.

The latest setting was discovered by users of the app and showcased on Twitter by social media consultant Matt Navarra.

Account holders’ screenshots depict that when clear mode is enabled, usernames, audio information, and captions are no longer visible.

How can I see if I can use the clear mode feature?

Those who currently possess the ability to use clear mode can do so  w hen they click and hold the screen, they will then see the following option.

The Clear Mode button will appear in the menu under the Add to Favorites button.

By tapping on it, individuals can start the clear & seamless viewing experience.

Implications and benefits of this

Looking at ways this can further improve the user experience – audiences on TikTok who want the video owner re-pload for instance will frequently mention to either get the original creator to remove the additional text covering the screen, so they can clearly see the video.

However, a negative implication as mentioned by Socialmediatoday is:

“For one, it would make likes, comments and sharing less immediate, which could reduce engagement, while it would also open up opportunities for screenshots without the user details on screen, which could lead to new conflicts with TikTok’s creator community.”

Another negative repercussion with be on brands using the app via in-house shopping on TikTok.

Often CTA buttons are used to direct viewers to shop products, disabling this could negatively effect TikTok’s business, so although it appears to be an arguably good option for users, it is not such a great move for any other stakeholder.
