A comment dislike button to make TikTok a safer place for creators

Creating a safe online community is an important objective of all the social media platforms on the internet today. TikTok, with the intention of improving the experience of its 1 billion users, is globally introducing the feature to downvote comments on videos. The feature was tested earlier this year to see how people can identify comments on the platform that are inappropriate and irrelevant, and turn it into feedback for the app.

Receiving input from users regarding the nature of comments on the app will help TikTok make the community a safer and more comfortable space for creators. TikTok, in a recent tweet, explained, “After some testing, we’re releasing it globally. We’ve created it as a new way to hear feedback directly from our community. This allows us to better identify irrelevant or inappropriate comments, which helps us foster a comment section for genuine and authentic interactions.”

What is the TikTok comment dislike all about?

Here are two things you need to know about the new TikTok feature:

  • The commenters will not be notified when their comment is voted down. The number of dislikes on the comment will also not be visible to users. The main priority of the video-sharing app is to find ways to create a better experience for its users.

  • The platform has created this feature to be able to receive efficient feedback from its users. The comment section on TikTok videos is probably not the best place to go, but with a feature like this, the app will be able to create a platform that is healthier for its audience.

The feature rolled out globally on the 23rd of September, and users are getting to use the new feature now. Several other social media apps have similar features that involve downvoting comments. Reddit has a downvote, and so does YouTube with its dislike button. Twitter has also been testing a downvote button for tweet replies.

Importance of creating a safe space in comment sections

Many social media apps’ comment sections are harmful and disrespectful. Therefore, social platforms must protect the mental health of their creators and users by introducing features and elements that improve the interaction on the app. TikTok, with this recent move, will effectively improve the way users interact on the app.

Next time you’re on the app, make sure to downvote inappropriate comments you come across to help create a safe place for fellow users!
