What is YouTube Music?
YouTube Music, the music streaming application developed by the video platform YouTube, was released in 2015 for users who primarily consume music through YouTube. Currently ranked No. 3 on the Top Free Music applications on the Apple Store, the app allows users to access the world’s largest collection of music, including live tracks, remixes, and covers, with ease.
Premium subscribers have access to ad-free music, and unlimited background playback, all while without having access to WiFi. With its latest update, artists and musical creators can get discovered by new fans every day.
What is ‘Samples’?
The Samples feature on YouTube Music will help users play small snippets of the latest trending tracks to help them find new artists and tracks of interest. The music they encounter will be aligned with their listening habits, which are tracked by YouTube Music.
According to T. Jay Fowler, Director of Product Management at YouTube Music:
“Powered by the world’s largest catalog of music videos, this personalized feed will explore the depths and breadth of the YouTube Music library so that there’s always something new to listen to, whether it’s the latest release from an up-and-coming artist or a deep cut from a legacy artist we just think you’d really like. Each immersive clip offers a glimpse into the artist, the video, and the feel of the song.”
Samples is focused on the music specifically, and allows users to swipe vertically to go through all the latest tracks in their favorite niche. When you find a track that you like, you can add the song to your collection, share it with friends, or watch the full clip, all in-stream. No longer relying on TikTok for the latest hits.
The Samples tab is beginning to roll out today to YouTube Music users globally.
What does this mean for artists?
The Samples tab will help new voices find their crowd, forgotten artists gain a new following, and popular creators to maximize their success. Artists can upload short-form videos of their performances and let YouTube Music do its magic and get them discovered.
Since the Samples tab will target users’ specific tastes and introduce them to new music, artists have a greater chance of getting noticed. Samples acts much like Spotify’s ‘Daily Mixes’ or ‘Made for You’ playlists, except with more engaging short-form videos.
By combining some of the best and most popular features of both TikTok and Spotify, YouTube Music will be able to help inspire real, devoted fandoms, which is what their platform is all about.
