Introducing Twitter Highlights: How to Enhance Your Tweet Strategy in 2023

With Twitter’s ‘Highlights tab’ you can now showcase the top performing tweets on your profile

Twitter Highlights tab

Twitter has recently announced a new tweet highlights tab for the Blue subscribers in the app, after testing the new feature for over a month and making sure it is good to go for the users. The latest highlights feature will enable users to showcase their best tweets via a new, dedicated feed on their Twitter profile.

About Twitter’s New Highlights Feature

Twitter Blue users can now add any of their favorite tweets to their Highlights tab, by choosing the ‘Add/Remove from Highlights’ option from the three dots dropdown menu at the top right of the tweet on the app. Even if you are not a Twitter Blue subscriber, you will still see the option but clicking the ‘Add’ option will take you to a sign-up window.

Once the tweet is added it will be listed among any other selected Highlight tweets in the new tab, but just to mention, it will only appear once the first highlight is added by the user.

The new feature was initially tested last month and gradually made available to selected users in the following weeks. Now, all the Blue subscribers can take advantage of this exciting addition—a feed showcasing their top tweets. While the extent of its promotional and connection benefits remains uncertain, this feature offers a potential opportunity to captivate new followers and showcase the brilliance of your tweets.

Analyses of Twitter user behavior have consistently revealed that the majority of interactions occur within the feed, with minimal engagement with individual profiles. Considering this, the value of adding the highlights feed to your profile might not be significantly substantial. However, it could serve as an additional means to attract potential followers, effectively showcasing your wit and expertise through your carefully curated tweets.

For brands, the new Highlights feature presents an opportunity to showcase products and amplify their impact. Highlighting tweets that feature your products, customer endorsements (via Quote tweets), or positive reviews can effectively serve as a product showcase within the platform.

While it may not necessarily be a significant driver of engagement, considering the available options and their inclusion as part of your promotional strategy in the app is worthwhile. It’s an additional element that can potentially attract attention and provide further exposure for your brand.

Although the impact on engagement may be limited, if the option is available, it’s advisable to utilize it to maximize the potential benefits for your brand presence on Twitter.

Twitter to Stop ‘Brands from Trendjacking’

Elon Musk, the social media platform’s CTO tweeted over the weekend a comment in response to complaints about scammers gaming replies to popular tweets in the app. Elon addressed some trending issues like ‘Newsjacking’, which has been a big means to gain exposure and promotion in the app, considering that a lot of brands use it as a tactic to create awareness.

This is definitely something that could now have a significant impact on your tweet strategy, depending on how serious Elon is about enforcing the suspension. He later clarified that considering a lot of tweet replies are also spam, it would be these spammers that he was specifically targeting.

Assuming this additional requirement is implemented as a new rule, it implies that trendjacking and participating in trending events could still be permissible. However, the extent to which this is allowed would ultimately depend on how Twitter chooses to enforce it. Presently, we only have Elon’s statements to rely on, and there is no explicit guideline in Twitter’s Ad Policies specifying the implications of this qualification.

It is possible that Twitter might introduce a clarification in the near future. It will be intriguing to observe the precise language they employ and how they aim to impose stricter measures against spammy responses for advertising purposes. This development could significantly impact Twitter’s strategies going forward.
