On May 21st each year, a gentle reminder to practice peace and self-care is widely talked about, through the celebration of World Meditation Day.

Various big pioneers who work within this field, and platforms such as Calm & Headspace, have allowed this day to become part of the public consensus through mindfully celebrating too.

Statistics show that, 200–500 million people meditate worldwide and meditation improves anxiety levels 60% of the time!

Furthermore, many workplaces are beginning to place an emphasis on the importance of connecting mind, body & soul. Numbers show that meditation can increase employees’ productivity by around 120%.

Across social media, there are plenty of avid meditating, green tea drinking gurus, that make a concious effort to share their knowledge with others around them.

Jay Shetty

With over 10 million followers on Instagram, best-selling author Jay Shetty has been a notable force in the meditation world.

As a former Hindu monk, Shetty first got into this field through meeting with a monk whilst at business school.

Shetty then spent 4 summers in India, working as an intern at corporations and training with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, and three years at an ashram in Mumbai, having to live a Vedic monk lifestyle.

Today, he has released various books, become a world-class Podcaster (the first year of his podcast had 64 million downloads worldwide) and has helped the likes of Khloe Kardashian, Kobe Bryant and now is Chief Purpose Officer of Calm.

Radhi Devlukia-Shetty

Radhi is Jay Shetty’s wife, who was born in England and suffered from bullying during her childhood.

Due to being a little chubby, her schoolmates would taunt her, and thus this took a major blow on her self-confidence.

However, it was meditation and growing up in a home that focused heavily on spirituality and self-love that helped her regain her sense of self.

Sadhguru, also known as Jagadish Jaggi Vasudev, is an Indian yoga guru and spiritualist.

Since 1982, Sadhguru has been teaching yoga in southern India.

In 1992, he founded the Isha Foundation near Coimbatore, which currently runs an ashram and yoga facility as well as educational programs.

He has published several books that have made it on the New York Times Best Selling Author lists.

Moreover, Sadhguru is a highly respectful public speaker, helping billions around the world reach enlightenment through his experiences and knowledge.

His YouTube videos are watched by millions of viewers, and currently has reached almost 10 million subscribers.

Emily Kessler

Emily Kessler, know as “Emily Meditates” on TikTok, has over 2 million likes on some of the content she shares on the app.

She is a “meditation teacher, marketing director and live event producer” and has mastered the art of teaching spiritual practices to the many skeptics around the world.

From reducing anxiety, to ego deaths and breathwork techniques, Emily has done a wonderful job at resonating with the younger users of the app who are looking to get into becoming more at one with their own spiritual journey.

Sharon Salzberg

Sharon Salzberg, who was born in New York City in 1952, went through a difficult upbringing.

Her life path was determined by an early revelation of the power of meditation to resolve emotional pain. Sharon was first introduced to Buddhism in 1969, during an Asian philosophy course in NY.

Her teaching practices and writing skills (having published over 10 books) now bring that power to a worldwide audience of professionals.

Her relatable approach has encouraged lineages of meditation teachers and wellness influencers.

Sharon was actually one of the first to bring the practice of meditation and mindfulness into mainstream American culture, over 45 years ago.
