Oh the Baguette…Picture Manhattan, glitzy nightlife, in a city that never sleeps, wearing a risky little number that makes everyone stare, killer heels, and of course don’t forget your IT bag to complete the look for a night out with your girls in town… Yes, that’s right Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw gave life to New Yorkers’ IT bag when she corrected a robber who stole her purse screaming; “It’s not a bag; it’s a BAGUETTE!”
A sentence that expressed love for fashion beyond a mere purse – it was something more, something far more significant that has a character of its own. And just like that, millions of viewers understood that even though the “sexy little bag” may come from Rome, it’s Manhattan who gave it life.
A Baguette is much more than just a bag, it has a personality of its own!
Fendi celebrated this dreamt-up Baguette icon of 25 years, with a debuted show for New York Fashion Week to commemorate the legendary bag and all its fashion history. A collection so unique that the Italian fashion house did not hold back as they collaborated with The King of American Fashion itself, Marc Jacobs, and Queen of New York accessories Tiffany & Co. to create a one-of-a-kind special collection.
Fendi wowed a star-studded audience with an equally starry runway show, opened by Lila Moss alongside supermodels Bella Hadid, Precious Lee, and Vittoria Ceretti who wore some of the hottest must-haves for next season.
The show screamed late 90s New Yorker fashion with a modern freshness of hybrid styles mixed between uptown and downtown culture that crystalized the Baguette’s fantasy and glimmering nightlife personality.
Creative Director Kim Jones has created a collection that, he confesses, is quite different from the shows he usually makes for Italy. Jones expressed that there is streetwise wisdom to these New York clothes—sleeveless tees and black-sequined windbreakers—and you cannot help but notice more than a smattering of that blue shade somewhere between sky and aqua, known universally as Tiffany Blue, showing up in everything from a gauzy asymmetrical skirt to a sleek jumpsuit.
A synergy of blues, yellows, and greys pulls together both fashion houses and combined with Jacobs’s iconic experimentation with proportions. Lots of layering and playful combinations of elegance with street-style attire were cleverly pulled together with bold saturations of violets, teals, greys, and yellows. For example, a big trend we predict to start hitting the streets is sexy sequin dresses topped with an over-sized blazer, high socks with either contrasting sneakers or heels that of course need to be emphasized by a bold bag (we suggest a baguette, but anything bold with sequence or an odd mix of coloring would do just fine.)
Glitter, paillette, basketball hats, and see-through mesh paired with pop colors of jaw-dropping Baguettes were amongst the strongest items on the runway as well seen by the guests such as Kim Kardashian, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Winnie Harlow.
Kim Jones along with head designer Silvia Venturini Fendi, Delfina Delettrez, and Marc Jacobs all took the stage to close the resort SS23 show, along with a major surprise moment of an appearance from legendary supermodel Linda Evangelista.
So, here’s a rundown of styling trends we suggest you should get ahead of on your Insta feed before the collection releases:
- Sequins handbags in bold colors that fit perfectly under the arm like a literal baguette
- Play with layering: 2 skirts over one another or a see-through top over a corset
- Balance elegant and streetwear styles: If you wear an elegant dress, pair it with sneakers and an oversized blazer.
- Play with volume and shapes: An oversized soft sweater with a mini schoolgirl skirt tied together with a belt and some colorful socks with heels.
- Jumpsuits with a very, very low V-neck (almost belly-level low)
- Clogs, but make it fashion
- Windbreakers
- SILVER is a must! Whether patent, reflective or sparkling, silver this season is a definite must-have
- And lastly, add a street-style hat to throw everything off balance but looks particularly odd yet super stylish at the same time
So here you have it; a show-stopping runway that definitely went far and beyond what was expected and leveled the playfield so high that other brands are probably wondering what to do more to beat the seat for New York Fashion Week.
