Instagram has finally made good on its promise.
Last week the Facebook-owned photo-sharing platform announced its users can now download a copy of their data from the company’s servers. This includes photos, videos and much more.
According to TechCrunch “. . . Instagram’s ‘Data Download’ feature can be accessed here or through the app’s privacy settings. It lets users export their photos, videos, archived Stories, profile, info, comments, and non-ephemeral messages, though it can take a few hours to days for your download to be ready.”
This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, especially after Facebook rolled out a similar feature for its social networking platform back in March.
While the photo-sharing app is still in the process of rolling out this new feature in its iOS and Android apps, downloading your data off of Instagram’s website is fairly straightforward. All you need to do is enter the email address attached to your Insta account and password on the website, and Instagram will email you a copy of what you’ve shared on the platform. Â
download your Instagram data but be warned: you may cringe yourself into nonexistence as you read every comment you've left on posts over the years https://t.co/neh7FN3cuk pic.twitter.com/YkyavRliB0

But as one reporter at Mashable discovered, Instagram isn’t sharing everything with its users. The digital media website reported that “. . . it does not include . . . a record of all the devices you’ve used to access your account, the times you’ve accessed your account, or other metadata that Instagram is likely collecting.”
It’s also worth noting that users don’t have instant access to their data. Once a request has been submitted, it can take up to 48 hours for the data to be sent through to an Insta user.
Either way, it’s worth downloading a copy of your data to see what information the photo-sharing app has on you.
