Dune 2 release delayed
Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated ‘Dune 2‘ has been pushed to next year amid the ongoing writers and actors strike. The strike prevents the film’s stars from promoting their films, which is essential for a successful box office opening.
The release of the Dune sequel has been delayed by 5 months. The film was originally scheduled to be released in November 2023, but will now be released in March 2024.
Dune, which boasts a star-packed cast led by Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, would have few viewers and be unable to fulfill its full box office potential without a strong global publicity push by the talent.
The Dune sequel will welcome new faces such as Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, and Léa Seydoux, while also bringing back familiar favorites such as Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, and Josh Brolin.
After it’s release 2021, Dune grossed more than $402 million at the worldwide box office. This was a great feat considering pandemic pressures and it’s simultaneous release on HBO Max. The sequel hopes to be an even bigger draw.
WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike explained
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) are two labor unions that represent writers and actors in the entertainment industry. In May 2023, the WGA went on strike against media companies such as Netflix, Disney, Paramount, Universal, and others.
Their demands included higher compensation and residuals, particularly for streaming shows, as well as new rules that would require studios to staff television shows with a certain number of writers for a specific period.
In July 2023, SAG-AFTRA joined the WGA on strike. SAG-AFTRA’s demands included a two percent cut of streaming revenue and a 230 percent increase in foreign streaming residuals.
The strike has had a significant impact on the entertainment industry. Production on and releases of many television shows and movies – Dune 2 being one of them – have been delayed or canceled.
