After years of talking about a fight happening between professional boxer Tommy Fury and YouTube Jake Paul, the day finally came. Saudi Arabia hosted both fighters at Diriyah Arena on Sunday the 26th of February 2023 filling out the 15,000-seat capacity in the room. The major fight was most talked about as it was the first fight in which Jake Paul would prove himself within the industry of boxing fighting a professional boxer who has come from a line of success – Tommy Fury.
Fury or Forgettable?
Father of Tommy Fury, John, and eldest brother Tyson had said in the media Tommy would have to change his last name if he was to lose against Jake Paul. With the stakes running high and confidence in their heir, it was time for Tommy to put his professional boxing skills to the test and reveal the truth.
In the ring
23-year-old Tommy Fury wore BAMBI on the front of his robe with a blue butterfly as he walked into the ring. He predicted he would put Jake Paul “to sleep” in the 4th round even though Jake Paul had played mind games with him backstage and tried getting under his skin.
Jake Paul, age 26 made his way into the ring calm and collected having practiced meditation throughout his training whilst the crowd cheered as well as booed him onto the stage.
Both men on the stage, Tommy Fury started quick by jabbing Paul as soon as the bell rang. In the first round, Fury heard the clap and charged toward Paul giving the judges the last impression. Tyson told his brother to power towards him before round 2 which is exactly what we saw in the next round. Tommy Fury again managed to catch Jake Paul in the next round but in round 3 Paul went full throttle jabbing his opponent. In the 3rd round, Paul gave Fury a slight head bump with a strong round from his side.
Round 4 is the round Tommy said he would finish his rival and he definitely controlled the round until the end when Paul threw a strong punch toward Tommy. In round 5, Tommy leads with a jab not allowing Paul to react fast enough – it is Tommy Fury’s movement that threw Paul off and out of frustration leads him to a point deduction for hitting Tommy at the back of his head.
Tommy got a light knockdown on the last round with Jake Paul putting all his force and efforts in. With such a close fight, Tommy Fury was announced the winner by the end and “the truth” was told.
What happens next?
Tommy Fury said he had “the world and pressure on his shoulders at age 23” having heard the same thing from everyone for 2 and a half years and the fight was dedicated to his “daughter Bambi” which he announced in the ring. Jake Paul then spoke and said “all respect to Tommy, he won. Judge me by my wins and not my losses.” He also said he didn’t agree with the judges as he did have two knockdowns against Tommy, and that he was ill during training camp. But he made no excuses that he lost against Tommy Fury and requested a re-match.
Thousands if not millions will be celebrating Tommy Fury’s return home to the UK as he is reunited with his girlfriend Molly-Mae and newly-born daughter Bambi. As Fury focuses on his boxing more than social media, it is Paul that will have millions to answer to. The Sunday evening fight was one that would have put Jake Paul on the map
