Concerns about iOS 17.2
In the latest iOS 17 update, Apple introduced a snazzy feature called NameDrop, allowing iPhone and Apple Watch users to effortlessly exchange contact information. However, law enforcement agencies across the US are cautioning userusers about potential safety risks associated with this feature.
Despite the alarm raised by police departments in various states, digital security experts dismiss the concern as “hysteria”. NameDrop functions similarly to Airdrop, requiring proximity and consent for information sharing.
How does NameDrop work?
NameDrop activates by holding devices near each other, giving users the option to either “receive only” or “share” contact information. Paychex software engineer Rufus Mathew recommends turning it on for networking events but suggests disabling it afterward to avoid unintentional sharing in public spaces.
Apple intervenes
The tech company has clarified that NameDrop is designed for selective information exchange, assuring that no information is automatically shared without user interaction. If users remain uneasy, they can easily disable the feature through settings, mitigating any privacy concerns.
How to disable NameDrop
Step1: Navigate to ‘Settings’
Step 2: Tap on ‘General’
Step 3: Click on ‘Airdrop’
Step 4: You will see a section “Bringing Devices Together”, toggle the option to the left to turn it off.
This simple step ensures that users have control over when and where their information is shared
In the end, while some law enforcement agencies are sounding the alarm, NameDrop seems to be more about personal choice and awareness. Whether you embrace it for its convenience or disable it for privacy, Apple provides users with the tools to customize their experience.
