The popular image-sharing website and application has witnessed immense growth by being a vast platform and an “inspiration home” for millions of creators. But with that, arrives another issue of underrepresentation, currently experienced by multiple minority creator groups.
Pinterest recently announced a couple of initiatives that will be set to completely ensure that Pinterest creators from minority groups also receive the equal representation that they deserve. The app also shows their inclusivity by partnering with diverse groups as well as by introducing a “Community Information” option where creators who own business profiles can update their information.
Furthermore, Pinterest will ensure that 50% of the managed creators the platform currently works with, stems from underrepresented groups.
“As we continue to build a platform for everyone, it’s important the ideas Pinners discover and take action on are inclusive of our global community.”, Pinterest explains in their announcement. “It’s hard to feel inspired if you don’t feel represented. Which is why we’ve taken actions like increased the quality and coverage of our skin tone ranges and improved the technology to detect multiple skin tones in top search results.”, it continued.
In the coming weeks, Pinterest creators or “Pinners”, retailers and advertisers can self-identify if they come from underrepresented groups so that their content can appear in the platform including the Today Tab, Shopping Spotlights and The Pinterest Shop.
Along with the announcement, Pinterest also shared their recent campaign initiative “Make the World See All Beauty”, in hopes of introducing enlightening conversations around beauty and representation. Pinterest hopes to shed light on a more representative future through a social film and a V Magazine cover wrap, in collaboration with ten unique and talented creators who are pushing boundaries with their content.
With the self-captured content from the creators, Pinterest intends to make all areas of beauty more representative. The campaign will go live on Pinterest creator social channels along with exclusive content that will be featured in creators’ Story Pins!
