Google releases free AI text-to-image generation in search 2023

Check out how Google’s new feature works and when you can use it

google announces ai text-to-image generation

Google is leaning further into generative AI, with a new element in Search that will enable you to create visuals from text prompts, so you can expand your discovery process beyond what you find in existing search results.

Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) will let you create images right from a text prompt starting Thursday, the company announced. This means, that for those who have opted into SGE through Google’s Search Labs program, it’s as simple as typing a query into the search bar. Then, within seconds, the website will generate four image options.

The GIF below demonstrates how its tool can create images based on a prompt. In a GIF, the company illustrated the usage of the tool to generate an image of a capybara wearing a chef’s hat and cooking breakfast, and how you can refine the search queries that Google uses to create each photo.

When using SGE, you might notice an option to generate AI-powered images directly in Images. This feature can be helpful when searching for a specific item but unable to find it in your Images results, particularly when seeking ideas or creative inspiration.

The company is also introducing a feature called SGE that allows users to generate written drafts right from the search bar. With SGE, Google can create a draft based on your query, which you can then modify to your liking. You can choose to create a draft that is either long or short, or one that has a casual tone. If you are happy with the result, you can export the draft to Google Docs or Gmail.

This feature is rolling out to SGE experiment users in English in the US and will take a while to launch globally. We’ll keep you updated when it is.
