Trouble in the Tech World: Layoffs expected at Facebook and Snapchat

What do these layoffs mean for all the influencers out there?

Reports have suggested that Facebook will be making a 15 percent layoff of its employees in the near future. The layoff comes at a time when the company is looking to restructure the business and its workforce. The possible layoff will include 12,000 people from the workforce.

An announcement was made by Meta earlier this year regarding a hiring freeze and the restructuring that would happen as a result. The ‘quiet layoffs’ will be carried out by possibly putting the employees on PIP (performance improvement plan) to be let go. These decisions come as a result of economic instability that has been seen in recent times across the globe.

Facebook has put forward different features and elements on its platform to potentially increase the number of active users. This includes features such as community chats and adding more ads to increase creators’ revenue on the platform.

Similarly, Snapchat also plans to lay off 20% of its workforce globally to improve the company’s efficiency. This decision will affect close to 1300 employees working for the social media app. The app will also shut down a few projects to restructure and improve the business.

New apps in social media

With the layoffs come the question of how well these social media apps are doing in light of new apps being launched today. Apps like BeReal come forward with a fresher approach to interacting with friends and family compared to the more well-established apps. While Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok, have imitated BeReal’s unique feature, this shows that new apps pose a threat to these bigger platforms.

What does this mean for social media influencers?

Influencers should look to diversify the platforms they create content on to increase their reach and audience. Every platform has unique features and audiences that influencers can interact with. By doing so, the creators can experiment with content creation of different types.

TikTok’s ban in India resulted in influencers using the platform to struggle to find other platforms to share their art and creativity. Therefore, relying on just one platform might not be the best idea! Get on new media and experiment with content creation. Take pictures, make videos, write about your experiences and share them with your followers.
