Yes, as you kind of already anticipated, TikTok is one of the most downloaded apps of 2021. By April of last year, the app had gained over 2 Billion downloads overall globally. Initially this app was seen as a Gen-Z space only, but it has experienced an influx of new users due to world-wide lockdown measures.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a big impact on the most popular apps of the year. TikTok went from being a ‘cringe’ app that only the younger kids use to an app that all ages of the family. They now have videos for parents, kids, teens, and everyone in between.
Although TikTok was the highest earning non-game app when looking at both app stores together, it trails behind Google Play when that platform was studied on its own. On Android devices, Google One continued to see the most revenue in 2021. By the end of 2021, the app will reach $1 billion in consumer spending, up 123 percent Y/Y from $448.5 million in 2020.
Surprisingly second on the list is Facebook… and then Instagram. Facebook rebranding itself to META showed us many instances of how Facebook is trying to up its game and bring back its young consumers. Read ‘Why is Facebook trying to win the youth‘ to know more about this.
