Android Users get a WhatsApp update featuring passkeys

WhatsApp users on Android can finally log in to their accounts using their phone’s facial recognition or fingerprint scanner instead of typing a password.

WhatsApp reveals passkey feature

WhatsApp continues to grow its user base, and they all want more privacy. Previously, on Android phones, users had to rely on annoying two-factor SMS authentication as a passkey. Instead, now, the new security option allows users to use their device’s face, fingerprint, or pin security to unlock and access their accounts and personal chats.

The company took to X, previously Twitter, to announce the news. “Android users can easily and securely log back in with passkey,” the post read, “Only your face, fingerprint, or pin” unlocks your account.

No news has been released regarding a similar feature or support for passkeys on iPhones. Android support will roll out over the coming weeks and months, according to the company. Passkeys can replace traditional passwords with your device’s own authentication methods.

More security

These passkeys are 40 percent faster than passwords and rely on a type of cryptography that makes them more secure. Perfect for hiding your personal conversations.

“But while they’re a big step forward, we know that new technologies take time to catch on, so passwords may be around for a little while,” Google had said in a statement.

Google earlier this year rolled out support for passkeys, a simpler and more secure way to sign into your accounts online, and received positive feedback. Only time will tell if the same remains true for the messaging application.
