Instagram’s 2023 Experiment: AI Chatbot Trials in DMs

You’ll soon be able to chat with AI on Instagram, too. Better than talking to humans? We don’t know yet

Meta makes sure it’s never falling behind on the latest in tech and the AI chatbot is no exception. The technology conglomerate is currently working on several new generative AI tools for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp that are intended to take advantage of new usage trends.

And although we’ve previously seen examples of multi-modal AI breakthroughs, visual prompt tools for Instagram stickers, and generative AI tools to help generate Facebook advertisements, Instagram is now creating a new AI chat feature so much like Snapchat’s My AI tool.

Instagram is working on a new AI chat feature that will let you ask questions and interact with an AI system within any chat thread. The program is also built to be able to provide you with tips on how to create messages that are more persuasive.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said:

“In the short term, we’ll focus on building creative and expressive tools. Over the longer term, we’ll focus on developing AI personas that can help people in a variety of ways. We’re exploring experiences with text (like cat in WhatsApp and Messenger), with images (like creative Instagram filters and ad formats), and with video and multi-modal experiences.”

For starters, more conversations on IG are moving to direct messages (DMs), and users are posting fewer Stories and feed items than in the past. As a result, Instagram has been exploring methods to broaden its messaging capabilities, and this might contribute to the trend by blending existing usage patterns.

The second major addition to Instagram’s AI family is generative AI and integrating these tools into social apps. The new IG messaging feature is likely to fall into the same category as those two use cases in that it is fairly entertaining to have on hand and to experiment with using some absurd questions. But it might not be a very helpful addition.

But it’s a starting point for Meta, for now.
