Students around the world are unable to take part in traditional graduation festivties due to COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions.Â
Facebook and Oprah Winfrey however are determined to give the Class of 2020 a virtual commencement ceremony to honor those who are unable to walk in official proceedings.
According to the website, on May 15 at 11AM PT/2PM ET, Facebook will broadcast #Graduation2020: Facebook and Instagram Celebrate the Class of 2020.
The ceremony will acknowledge high schools and colleges in the US by name, state by state, including photos and videos of the class of 2020 and messages from deans and principals across the country. The video will be shared on Facebook Watch and available at facebook.com/facebookapp. Highlights and more will be posted to the @instagram account on Instagram, and on contributors’ social media accounts.
Joining Winfrey on the virtual stage are Awkwafina, Jennifer Garner, Lil Nas X, Simone Biles and more to be announced.
Miley Cyrus will serve as the special musical guest for the celebration where she will perform her hit song ‘The Climb.’
Instagram itself will be getting some product updates, too, including a graduation countdown sticker, celebratory sticker pack, music stickers that connect to graduation songs, new AR effects, and a custom hashtag page for #Graduation2020.
