1. Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story
A true crime renaissance happened in 2022, and it started with this series. Starring Evan Peters, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story was released by Netflix and has since gathered quite the buzz. The true crime series covers the life of Jeffrey Dahmer, and how he became one of the most notorious serial killers in America. It also dramatizes instances where Dahmer was nearly apprehended by police until his ultimate conviction and death.
2. When They See Us
Based on events of the 1989 Central Park jogger case, the true crime series When They See Us released in 2019 explores the lives and families of the five Black and Latino male suspects who were falsely accused then prosecuted on charges related to the case. The Emmy-nominated series is available to stream on Netflix now. Divided into 4 parts, it’s a quick watch and perfect for anybody who loves true crime.
3. Mindhunter
Based off true events, with some fictionalized details, Mindhunter, directed by David Fincher is available to stream on Netflix. If you’re a big fan of Criminal Minds, this is the true crime series for you. It discusses the early days of criminal psychology and criminal profiling at the FBI, while also showcasing serial killers such as Edmund Kemper, and how he assisted the FBI in understanding how a serial killer’s mind works.
4. Under the Banner of Heaven
This American true crime series premiered in 2022 on Hulu, and stars the Amazing Spider-Man himself – Andrew Garfield. In Under the Banner of Heaven, Garfield plays police detective Jeb Pyre, whose faith is shaken when investigating the murder of a mother and her baby daughter that seems to involve the Latter-day Saints Church. Garfield’s performance received great critical acclaim, and makes for an extremely chilling watch.
5. Inventing Anna
This American true crime series inspired by the story of Anna Sorokin and an article published by ‘New York’, was released by Netflix in 2022. Anna Sorokin was a con artist who tricked people into believing she was a German heiress with access to a substantial fortune. The series covers how Anna used this persona to receive hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and services, all-while working towards reaching the goal of opening an exclusive art-themed club.
6. Black Bird
Based off James Keene’s autobiographical novel, Black Bird is a true crime series that covers James’ life after being sentenced for 10 years. Given Jimmy’s natural charming and charismatic personality and gift for talking, he was offered an opportunity for a fully commuted sentence with a clean record and no conditions by federal authorities.
But of course, there’s a catch, and this is the story of the very real and very dangerous deal he was offered and what happened next. The miniseries is available on Apple TV+ now.
