Kim Kardashian recently made waves by wearing a waistcoat once donned by Janet Jackson. Kim shared a photo of herself in the outfit on Instagram on Tuesday, ahead of attending Janet’s concert with her mother, Kris Jenner, and sister, Khloe Kardashian.
Kim’s Instagram post, taken in her Los Angeles mansion, showcased her in the historic outfit. To celebrate Janet Jackson’s birthday, Kim also uploaded a photo of Janet in the same attire, captioning it, “For Janet Jackson’s birthday because I’m such a fan. I can’t believe I won this outfit.”

About the waistcoat outfit
The ensemble featured a black cropped waistcoat with white plastic detailing down the front, paired with skin-tight black flared pants laced along the waist. Janet Jackson originally wore the iconic outfit briefly in the 1993 “If” music video, and it was sold for $25,000 at the “Iconic Treasures from the Legendary Career and Life of Janet Jackson” auction in May 2021.
Kim faces backlash
Kim’s decision to wear the outfit sparked a backlash on social media, especially on Reddit, where fans criticized her for potentially ruining a piece of music history.
One user wrote, “Kim is not happy unless she’s ruining iconic outfits,” while another suggested she should have replicas made instead of wearing the originals. The criticisms also recalled the controversy surrounding Kim’s 2022 Met Gala look, where she wore Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress, which some believed she had damaged.
