Pinterest, the number one app for discovering recipes, home ideas, style inspiration, and other popular searches has told us their 2023 predictions using data and science. The app has reported the data coming from behind the scenes of months of analysis and making sure they have the right ‘signals’ to be able to predict trends.
4 Key Stage
There are four key stages to the way Pinterest put together the trends for the coming year. They are:
- Data examination
- Curation
- Inclusion
- Accountability
Data looks at trend spotting and what’s rising at the top of the platform, curation is going through approximately 500k search and filtering through the relevant ones, and taking more of a global approach to why it’s trending. We then have inclusion which is the next stage looking at what is valued as part of the company’s wider mission and ethos. All of the trends that have been filtered are then vetted for global relevancy and representation through testing and reviews before the final stage of accountability. The trends that are now finalised are graded meaning Pinterest will see how each of the trends performs through the year and see if they will fall flat.
80% Accuracy
So far, 80% of the predictions Pinterest has made in the past have been accurate. That is what the future is all about having a team of expert individuals helping content creators and influencers with their content. Thanks to the platform, Pinterest has done the work for you to take advantage of their premonition or ‘crystal ball’ as they put it.
Airy Styles
2023 fashion will be filled with lace, tulle, ruffles, and shimmer for everyone based on rising searches from Gen Z and Millennials. “Ruffle shirt for men” and “sheer pants outfit” are just two examples of this tulle-y trend. Time to trade in that moto jacket and your combat boots for ethereal details—no matter how you identify. This year will be a femme for all.
Rust Married
So long, something blue. Hues of terracotta, copper, and burnt sienna will be frequent guests at weddings this year. Based on rising searches from Millennials and Gen X, you’ll see this smoldering color everywhere in 2023, from floral arrangements to bridesmaid dresses. And hey, if a big wedding isn’t your thing, you can-elope (sorry).
Gemini Hair
Geminis don’t have to choose—your hair shouldn’t have to either. In 2023, two-toned tresses will take off more than ever. Gen Z and Millennials are behind this rising trend in hair color that mixes natural hues with bright blues, purples and pinks—“blue and black braids” and “lavender and blonde hair” are on the up. Two is always better than one, just ask the Gemini in your life.
Micro Makeover
From micro manis to barely-there bobs, this year’s beauty looks will be a cut above the rest. Millennials and Gen Z are trading in their long, coffin-shaped nails for mini French manis. They’ll opt for short braids and chopped bangs instead of long, luscious locks. In 2023, small beauty gets its big break. Farewell, so long.
Pool Pawties
Dogs diving! Puppers paddling! Barking belly flops! In 2023, pool parties are going to the dogs. We’re talking party invitations, party favors, party decorations—Gen X and Boomers don’t plan to hold back for their next pet pool party. Jump on in, doggo, the water’s fine.
Chance of Showers
No bath? No problem. 2023 will be all about the elevated shower routine. Gen X and Boomers will turn rinsing into a ritual in the year ahead, searching for shower bombs and home spa bathrooms.
Sci-fi Fits
2023 fashion will be light-years ahead. Searches for dystopian outfits and futuristic fits will spike as Gen Z and Millennials opt for cyber streetwear, galactic glasses and gamer-girl styles.
Rainscapes
Green living has flourished, but in 2023, people will take water conservation to new heights. And this doesn’t just apply to drought-stricken environments: Boomers and Gen X all over the globe will invest in rainwater harvesting, rain barrels and drought-tolerant landscaping for natural ways to make their homes more sustainable.
Hipstoric Home
In 2023, people will find new ways to honor old stuff in their homes. Got a hand-me-down handy? These searches are helping people combine vintage—often inherited—pieces with their modern styles. Thanks to the Boomers and Gen X driving these trends, antiques have never looked so chic.
Primal Movement
In 2023, people will trade their screens for stretches and their desks for tricep dips. These primitive, anti-tech workouts invite people to put down their phones and prioritize posture. Gen X and Millennials are driving this trend up, with searches like “primal movement” and “neck hump exercises” jumping this coming year.
The YOLO Years
Sorry kids, Nana’s got plans. In 2023, Boomers and Gen X will plan epic bashes for major milestones, from 100th birthday parties to 50th anniversaries. And Oldbashes are way bigger than bingo—look no further than jubilee cakes and thoughtfully decorated cookies. You know what they’ll say: more years, more reasons to party.
Wildflours
Green thumbs, get thee a rolling pin. Gen X and Millennials are behind this trend that’s trading bouquets for bouqakes. The apothecary aesthetic comes to the kitchen, with people of all ages tackling ambitious sweet treats like wildflower cupcakes and daisy desserts.
The Forth Trimester
People are increasingly coming to Pinterest for their postpartum needs. Searches from Millennials in particular suggest that, this year, people are seeking ways to support parents during that famous fourth trimester—searching for everything from postpartum meals to gifts and essentials.
Date Different
Dinner and a movie is so 2022. In the year ahead, Gen Z will embark on a different kind of dating experience, opting for experiential outings like bookstore dates, museum meet cutes and aquarium adventures. Because who needs “dinner and movie” when you have “bookstore and manatee”?
Romcom Core
Move over, barbiecore—there’s a new main character in fashion. In 2023, Gen Z and Millennials will romanticize their closets with slip dresses, tube tops, cargo pants, and claw clips. Get ready for a new kind of meet-cute, inspired by your favorite romantic comedies from the 2000s. For Millennials, this might be a nostalgic trend, but for Gen Z, it’s not-stalgic: Who says that just because you didn’t live through it, you can’t live in it?
Mush-Rooms
Boring homes, be gone. In 2023, Gen Z and Boomers will make room for weirdcore design, mushroom decor, and fantasy art in their sacred spaces.
Fringe with Benefits
Fringe will make a major comeback in 2023—and not in the ways you might expect. Gen X and Millennials will trade in their typical tassels for free-swinging fringed outfits, dresses and jackets. And for the unconventional bride: Fringe wedding dresses are trending up.
Crown Care
If you want to get a head start on hair care in 2023, go back to your roots. “Skinification,” or a focus on the scalp and crown of your head, will be a priority this year. Searches from Gen X and Boomers show an uptick in care for the scalp, like “scalp treatment” and “clean scalp.” This is your chance at a root revival. Now, who wants a scalp massage?
Beyond Blue & Pink
Gender norms are shifting—and parenting approaches are, too. Searches among Gen Z and Millennials show a desire to break down the binary as they raise the next generation. From pronoun flashcards and gender flags to self-identity art and unisex names, they’re proudly practicing gender-neutral parenting.
Now Processing
More ways to feel your feels in 2023. Alternatives to talk therapy are on the rise—like expressive art and music therapy—as well as art journaling, which is up a whopping 37x. Gen Z and Millennials are driving this trend, seeking new, creative ways to work on themselves.
Free Spirits
Enough with the drinking judgement. Sometimes people want to drink, sometimes they don’t, sometimes they only want to drink a little—it’s not that complicated. Gen X will drive this trend, demanding mocktails, cocktails and low-ABV options for all. Now that’s refreshing.
All Aboard
More sustainable travel? That tracks. In 2023, train travel will make a major comeback. Thanks to quicker boarding, extra legroom, scenic views, and a lower carbon footprint, Gen Z and Millennials will find a renewed love for this timeless mode of transportation. Searches for Europe interrailing, train quotes and train travel aesthetics are all trending way up.
Cha-Ching Challenge
Finance, but make it fun. This year, Gen X and Millennials will seek out new ways to gamify their finances, searching for budget challenges and saving games.
Good on Paper
Analog hobbies: so in right now. Paper crafts will make a comeback this year, as Boomers and Gen Z turn to quilling, origami, and paper art to satisfy their crafty cravings.
All the Raves
Rave culture will reign in the year ahead. As Gen Z and Millennials recover from over two years in lockdown, they’ll take over nightclubs, warehouses and house parties all over the globe. Techno style, rave fashion and house music outfits are all trending up.
Home Front
The backyard has had its moment—it’s time to serve the greeter good. In 2023, the front porch will get the spotlight treatment. Rising searches suggest Boomers and Gen X will adorn their entrances with elaborate decor and embellishments.
Vitamin Seaweed
In 2023, the hottest superfoods will be from the sea. A long-standing staple in Asian cultures, ocean-based foods and minerals are growing in popularity among Millennials and Gen X all over the globe thanks to their much-needed health benefits. Everything from green algae and nori to seaweed snacks is trending up.
