Snapchat releases ‘Dreams’

In 2022, Snapchat released a “My AI” chatbot that can generate simple solutions to questions such as “what should I get my best friend for her birthday” or “what should I have for dinner”.

Snapchat has come a long way since then, especially since introducing its new AI selfie feature. Earlier this year, AI-edited and generated pictures were a viral trend on TikTok. Users could choose from various themes and different effects, filters, stickers, backgrounds, and sounds that are powered by AI on live and TikToks on the social media platform.

‘Dreams’ features

Located in the camera roll section of the application called Memories, ‘Dreams’ are the company’s own take on the generative AI selfies that social media platforms such as TikTok and applications such as Lensa were able to popularize earlier this year.

If you upload a real-life selfie on Snapchat Dreams, you then get to choose between eight photo packs for several themes ranging from doppelgangers to back-to-school. The pictures can take anywhere between 20 and 30 minutes to generate. While the “My AI” chatbot is powered by OpenAI’s technology, Dreams is based on open-source technology, and each art style is made by the employees at Snap Inc.

The first pack of Dreams is free to make and each additional one costs $1 as an in-app purchase. Users of the application in Australia and New Zealand received access to Dreams on the 30th of August. The rest of the world will gain access over the coming weeks.

In an interview with The Verge, Jack Brody, the application’s VP of product, stated, “We’ve always approached creating value for the Snapchat community by doing things that are playful, that are fun, [and] that are sometimes a little bit silly and a little bit weird. And I think Dreams really fits into that.”

At the moment, many features are still under construction, such as being able to send your own prompts and customize pictures, and being able to add your friends to your Dreams.

Will you be testing out this feature when it comes to users worldwide?
