It really doesn’t come as a surprise to see Twitter’s new privacy policy come to life at this specific timing; with giant platforms such as Google introducing tools to help you control your online presence, Twitter is forced to up its game and make users feel safe and respected on the app.
Thus, the social network introduced an updated privacy policy along with a redesigned privacy site but that’s not what should put other platforms to shame; it’s actually the method that Twitter’s team utilized to announce the changes.
To start off with the Twitter’s new privacy policy on the reimagined website, Twitter dives into the details to explain the reasons behind the latest update:
“It shouldn’t take a law degree to understand privacy policies, so we’ve rewritten ours to try and make it useful – emphasizing clear language and moving away from legal jargon. Beginning today, you can see the updates to our privacy policy and terms of service in the app via settings and on our redesigned privacy policy site.”
Finally! This is definitely a win for the platform’s users, who can now finally understand their rights and duties without skipping them all just because the language is too puzzling.
In addition to making much needed changes to the language, Twitter’s new privacy policy display was split into three main sections, which are data collection, data use, and data sharing, in order to make it easier for visitors to locate the right info.
If that’s not enough, Twitter is also giving you the ability to download a PDF of the full privacy policy with a tap of a button from the main page.
However, we still haven’t gotten to the exciting part. Twitter’s new privacy policy definitely wasn’t announced in a usual way; to announce the new version, the platform launched ‘Twitter Data Dash’, a privacy education game that was created to take users through Twitter’s various policy elements through an engaging 2D game.
Twitter’s team explains how it works with the following (simple) statement:
Welcome to PrivaCity! Get your dog, Data, safely to the park. Dodge cat ads, swim through a sea of DMs, battle trolls, and learn how to take control of your Twitter experience along the way.
From what we’re seeing, the app definitely deserves credit for attempting to encourage online users to discover Twitter’s new privacy policy and going out of their way to develop a game that can be useful to anyone, no matter how young or old they are. As important as it is nowadays, digital literacy is not talked about enough which is why we often find people using social media for the wrong reasons.
What’s left for us to do now is hope more platforms join in on this movement and make their rules and regulations more user-friendly.
