Will Wednesday Season 2 Be On Prime Instead Of Netflix?

After Amazon’s acquisition of MGM, the creative studio of The Addams Family, the Netflix series Wednesday could possibly move to Amazon.

Netflix’s Addams Family revamp series, Wednesday may not be sticking around Netflix rumors say. The series even beat Stranger Things for the most amount of viewing hours 1 week after release. However, there has yet to be a word about a renewal for season 2. Will Netflix lose Wednesday?

Wednesday heading to Prime?

The hit series Wednesday directed by Tim Burton, who’s known for his gothic and fantasy films, landed on Netflix‘s screen in November of 2022. Since then the series and lead actress Jenna Ortega has received much praise. Despite the records it broke and all the praise it received there has yet to be an announcement about the renewal of the series for a second season.

The Addams Family cartoons started with its creator Charles Addams in the 1930s, the film franchise however is currently owned by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). As Amazon closed a merger with MGM last year, Netflix may not have any choice but to let the series go. The 8 billion-dollar merger may have included rights to the Addams Family franchise. None of this has been confirmed, and Netflix may even strike a deal with Amazon in order to keep the series as it is one of the trendiest and most popular series on the platform.

After some sleuthing, What’s On Netflix (the go-to blog about everything Netflix) announced that whether Wednesday stays or leaves the streaming giant is up to Netflix as long as the platform decides within the determined renewal period in their contract. In other words, if Netflix renews Wednesday for a season 2 within the renewal period the show stays on Netflix. On the other hand, if Netflix passes by the predetermined renewal period then there is a higher probability of Wednesday going to Amazon Prime Video.

Hypothetically, if Netflix didn’t renew the series during the renewal period then the rights can go to Amazon but season 1 of Wednesday would still be available on Netflix for at least the next 10 years. This is what happened to Netflix’s Marvel series Jessica Jones and Daredevil. Disney Plus had paid Netflix a hefty sum in order to attain the Marvel series from the platform, so even if Amazon does want to take Wednesday it will definitely cost them a lot. Moreover, MGM has not announced any Addams Family projects, so we may not see Wednesday outside of Netflix in the near future.

What has been heard about the series is the direction the cast said they wanted to take with the series. Jenna Ortega noted that she wanted less focus on love triangles and wanted the season to be darker than the first. Ortega wants her character to “not play it safe” in season 2. The actress also noted that she’d like Wednesday to be more like an anti-hero. The last episode of the series did tease more trouble for the beloved character so we, the audience, will just have to sit back and wait.
