Instagram Outrage

An Instagram outrage that left millions of users blocked out or losing follower counts that occurred on Monday morning has been resolved, Instagram confirmed on its Twitter account. During the outrage, Instagram locked users out and gave a notification banner that read, “we suspended your account on October 31, 2022.”

Suspended users caused global outrage on Twitter

Influencers, active users, and small businesses were infuriated and took to Twitter to denounce the functionality of the application and its technical faults that disrupted users’ activity, business practices, and resources of daily information. Reports of the issue seemed to have been concentrated among iPhone users, with some saying their app was recently crashing and unusable ahead of an update earlier this morning.

“We’ve resolved this bug now – it was causing people in different parts of the world to have issues accessing their accounts and caused a temporary change for some in number of followers. Sorry”, Instagram wrote.

The platform first announced the technical glitches of the issue via a Tweet on its official Twitter account at 10:14 am ET. It was only many hours later that night at 18:00 pm ET, that they confirmed that the bug was resolved. Adam Mosseri retweeted the official statement of Instagram onto his personal account to address the outrage with a caption that stated, “Our apologies…”

In addition, influencers and small businesses who depend on the platform’s functionality for their livelihood lost an entire day’s of traction towards their work, which could be seen as a loss of potential income.

The most influential and followed athlete in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo, reportedly lost 3 million followers in a matter of seconds. Before any faulty bugs, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Instagram account stood at a staggering 493 million followers, and at around 10:15 am ET it appeared the immense decrease caused by Instagram’s faulty bug. To add on, even Instagram’s own primary account was down by over a million users.

For now, all the technical glitches have been resolved, and users have reported that their accounts are back online, although many are disappointed in the platform’s lack of dependency especially when it comes to business and the public holiday of Halloween, where users expected to be active.
