Find out all the ways to claim an Instagram username that is currently in use

Claim Instagram Username

Everybody knows the feeling they get when they try to sign up for an Instagram account but the username they want is already taken. And some people might be willing to give up defeat, but not everybody is. So here’s a guide on how to claim an already-taken Instagram username.

How to claim an Instagram username that’s taken

You see the bold note in red when trying to change or claim a username: This username isn’t available. Please choose another. Here’s what you do next.

Remember, it is possible to claim an already-taken username, but your chance of success depends on the circumstances. There are no guarantees—Meta itself says that “usernames are generally claimed on a first-come, first-served basis.”

1. Contact the account owner

The most simple way to claim a username that’s already taken is by messaging the current holder directly and asking them to change their username. Explain the issue in case you need the username for a business profile, and ask them if they’d consider changing it.

2. Contact Instagram

The second option is to report the account to Instagram in case it is inactive. If this is the case, you can approach Instagram directly and demonstrate that the account is dormant. Ask them to consider transferring the username to you instead.

Send an email to support@instagram.com. Rather than simply demanding the username, state that the account with the handle you want is inactive. However, it is difficult that you will receive a reply. Millions of people use the app, so they don’t have the power to stay on top of all emails and messages.

Additionally, the app’s help center states that “If a username you want is being used by an account that seems inactive, you can choose an available version of the username,” So, no help there. But you can still try to contact them and see if it’s possible.

In the event that you do not receive a response from Meta, the next best option is to just settle for a closely related username. Use a variation or a likeness to your niche/brand name in your username to build your presence. Here are some things to try:

  • Use a nickname instead.
  • Use punctuation such as underscores (_), or full stops (.). For example, @ITP_Live
  • Use a niche that defines your Instagram or brand strategy, such as @mariestanfashion. This also helps users find your account quicker when searching for a specific keyword (in this case, fashion).
  • Use an abbreviation of your brand name. For instance, @mariestanfshn.

Try not to be too disappointed if you don’t get the initial username you wanted. You may have to compromise and your handle might not be your first choice, but any Instagram presence is better than none at all. Just create content and have fun posting.
